My dear little sister,
I hope you will forgive me for not writing sooner but you know how hard it is to settle down to write a letter.
Listen honey, you said you needed a good housekeeper. Could I qualify? My age is sixteen years, I am in good health and I could give the best recommendations I have been working at housework for about four years now and I have taken cooking up at the school. I also know how to sew nicely and could do all the sewing and mending. Also I could take in a little sewing or take care of some kids in the afternoon, How about it? Just think it over and if you say the word I’ll come this summer after school is out. How are you and Don making now? I can imagine how terrible it is to come home and find the dirty apartment with dirty dishes laying around waiting to be washed for starting dinner and dirty some more. Just imagine how nice it would be come home at night to a nice clean apartment with the little floor lamp lit and a nice piping hot dinner ready to be served? With me little Babe ready and willing to serve it. Waiting for you to come and anxiously opening the door for you just to ask you if you are tired or hungry. Pipe dreams? I must say. But then what would you do without dreams? Life wouldn’t be worth living if we couldn’t hope and dream. Wouldn’t it, dear?
Say honey, have you heard the song, “I’m looking over a Four Leaf Clover”. It certainly is pretty. We have that on the Victrola have you heard the one “Get away old man get away”? (I can’t seem to write, the music is going and you know me) this song we go for mamma’s benefit and Paynes. The verse says “Now listen all you maidens about to choose a man don’t take one when is ancient. Get a young man if you can. (Impossible to write) for a aged man he is old, for a aged man he is gray and a young man’s heart is full of love. Get away old man get away.
Don’t ever marry an old man and I’ll tell you the reason why. His lips are all tabucker (tobacco Sp?) juice and all his chin is never dry and old man he is old for an old man he is gray. But a you man’s heart is full of love. Get away old man get away. Rather in tune to mammas feeling of Payne. She is always complaining that he chew tobacco and it gets on his chin rather clever eh? Sorry you’ll excuse all this silly running on and this terrible writing.
Oh honey, my class play went off swell. I did fine and I wasn’t even scared. Imagine me getting up there and talking silly stuff. O it was great. You ought to have seen dad and Pearl. They certainly were pleased and proud. Dad gave me $2.00. I tood it and some of my own money and got the cutest little red hat to go with my coat. The top is frosted felt. All of it is felt. O certainly look cute. Am sending you a picture taken at the Hollywood Studion Tads. It isn’t very good of my face but you can see something of my coat and hat. I would send you some f me in my costume and my coat and hat but we haven’t any money to get them developed yet. We certainly will have next time. Inviet (?). also a picture of the kid I am going with. Edith and I met him at a dance and have know him for a long time. Just before my class play came off I tried to sell him a ticket. Edith was going to have to come alone so he brought her. I took her out a couple of times after that one being Sunday to make it four. We didn’t have a very good time. We went on the Swan Boat that nite. Well, Edith had to go to a shower in Miss King last Wed. and so Al took tat as an excuse to take me out. We went to the Cotillion and Edith came up after the shower. Al is 18 and a very nice kid. I said something to him about him being very good at stringing both of us along. He said that I was the first one he took out alone and that he has been waiting to see which one of us like him the best. Edith is going with another Al. The boy that was the instructor over at the skating rink. You know how darned fickle she is. It made me mad at first because she seems to monopolize Al Schuller, (the boy I am going with now) at first. Last nite (Sat) a bunch of us were going to Blue Lake and Al was to get a boy for Edith and the kid didn’t show up. (This other Al, hers, doesn’t dance but we’re certainly going to show him). We took her along anyhow and she had a perfectly terrible time. She got mad at Al for not having this boy. It wasn’t his fault. Anyway he chose me in the end. He calls me “the little devil” because I’m always full of pep and singing. He says he likes me that way and you know Edith doesn’t act that way at all. We are as different as day and night but we get along fine together. I hope Al calls up today and takes me to a show. It certainly is terrible when Sunday comes around and we have to sit around the house. Al doesn’t drink or smoke. Jimmy just quit calling me up so I used to call him once-in-a-while and just decided that I would not do it any more. I still like him and admire him but I guess he is too busy to have a steady girl altho’ I never went with anyone else since I met. Even tho’ he came over only about once in every 2 or 3 weeks. It gets too monotonous this to sit around and wait for him to call at his leisure. Al is a keen dancer and I certainly can dance with him. He says I am the first one he has met that can follow good. He very seldom fools me in a step and when he does its because I’m not paying attention to my dancing. I lead Edith in the Slow Drags and do the nine step keen too. Al says he is jealous of me in that he can’t lead in the nine. We are going to go to the cotillion now because our gang is going there. We like the floor and the music better. We never dance with strangers any more. If they want to dance with us they have to get someone whom we know to introduce us and if they are real good dancers we dance with them. We don’t waste our time on poor dancers because we know plenty who are good. We have lots of fun too.
We are having the funniest weather. It rains and the sunshines rather spasmodically all the time. April showers I guess. We have our class pins now and they certainly are darling.
Say honey I am trying to find time to reline me last summers coat and just as soon as I have it done I am going to send it post hast to you. I’ll try to get it done this next week. I’ll have Betty help me with it.
Edith and Al Hultburge (I don’t know how to spell his name) and me and my Al are going to Betty’s Tuesday nite to have some fun probably play cards or something like that. Edith’s Al is 21 and more her age don’t you think? My Al said last nite that I am the first girl he has gone with who is nearer his age but he said he wished I were older as then I wouldn’t be fickle. I told him I wasn’t but that Edith has gone with about 4 different kids since I have been going with Jimmy. I’m not fickle, am I? I don’t like to go with more than one boy at the same time. Would you? Edith dos tho’. She certainly is a funny girl isn’t she?
We were talking of going in training together but we can’t get in () because we haven’t had 4 years high school. Edith may be able to get into one in Spokane and if I come down here we will be pretty well settled for a few years any how. Momma and Payne will probably break up because they do every time he comes to town. She still has his ring but I don’t think they will get married. She and Kerns had a fight lately but before he has been taking her to lunch and bringing her home. Momma denied all this but Kerns come and tells us himself. He is coming to California soon maybe or going to Arizona. Well dear I suppose I would like to go on like this forever and I know that wouldn’t do because I have to sure something to tell you. Will close hoping everything is all right with you and you are well.
Love to both,
Babe [Anne's Sister]

Dear Ann –
It’s bedtime but I’m sure you would like to know how David did in his recital. He made one mistake stopped, picked it up and finished o.k. There were at least 60 people there and he got one of the biggest hands. Everyone said he did very well for on so little. He looked so cute. I had his suit you got him cleaned and it still fits him. It’s the first time he has had occasion to wear it. He has been sick with a upset stomach & running off the bowels since Sat nite but is o.k. tonite. He’s lost some weight again but will gain it back I’m sure, he did look so well and weighed 53 ½, I think, at school.
Danny was thrilled with his card & I’m going to get him some thing he’ll need. E (Edith?) sent him 2.50 & I let him buy himself a mitt bat and ball. He’s putting the $ in with the money he makes selling magazines to buy himself a bicycle. I’m encouraging him as I think he’ll get more kick out of it & appreciate it if he feels he’s earning the money, I haven’t been giving him an allowance as I haven’t been able to spare it but it won’t hurt him to save what he earns.
They enjoy giving out to the ranch on the week ends and Tom is staying there with Buddy & Ginger. He’s getting quite a tan all ready and is eating like a horse. He drinks 2 glasses of milk besides his dinner sometimes. We got a couple of goats cheap so he’s drinking goats’ milk. I must try to get some films & send some pictures. We took Al’s girl Manial (sp?) out this Sat & she broke out with measles Sun. I have here with me for a couple days. We get along fine and she’s no trouble, she’s not really sick but they can’t go to school for a few days.
We want to buy us a cow soon as the bills are up and going up still more & will be high for several years. It’s impossible to get a good cow for less than $100 or $125. Isn’t that awful for just one cow? But we’ll have to have one.
Al’s having his troubles! The car is beginning to go haywire in every way now. Has 65,000 miles & never any work on it. Now the back spring is broken on one side and it is apt to fall off and then loose a fender or wreak the wheel & tire. He’s going to see what kind of deal he can get on another one. By the time he puts in $150 or $200 on a complete overhaul he might as well get a new one as he’ll still have just an old car after all the expense. It’s same maddening when everything happens at once but he has to have quick sure transportation driving 25 min to work.
Harry is sick again. His back started bothering him and it hit him all of a sudden. He’s going into the hospital next week for a general exam again. I’m afraid they’ll pull him off as he’s been off so much with illness.
Mom & Pearl went to the recital with us. Believe me some of the children could sure play.
Boy we are all hoping & playing you can come up this summer. It would sure be nice. I’d love to ride down & then come up with you. I haven’t mentioned it but it was just a pleasant thought.
Wonder what E. will do if Del goes into the Army? It probably will be soon from what Mrs. M. says to mom. I get more good out of those slacks you sent me. I took them up in the crotch several inches and they are ok now. That’s about all I wear now & will be more so when I get out on the ranch. Only washable ones. Everyone sure gets dirty. We have to get a water system in before we can have running water & bathroom.
We sure want to get it in as soon as we can but it costs so much for plowing & seeding. The seed runs over $100, too? Boy it sure costs money to farm and you can put it all back into the place & still wonder where it all goes. It’s sure nice tho’ in the spring and summer. The lambs are sure cute. We have quite a time cutting off their tails. Everyone takes part it seems. It’s a grand way to raise children believe me.
Must get to bed & get some sleep. Have been up with David & am tired.
Thanks so much for the check, Ann, I hate to take your money but I never seem to have any left for incidentals & Al has his hands full right now trying to get caught up. He was off 10 days with measles which set him back plenty just when he needs it most.
Please don’t wait so long to write. We all enjoy so much hearing from you.
I sure like to find out if Dan is working steady & try to get some each month out of him. I might write the union. I don’t know if they’d give out any info or not.
Love from us all and thanks a million again

Dear Ann,
While I listen to the radio I decided I’d write to you. Haven’t heard from you for so long – time sure slips by before we realize it.
Well I expect Edith has written you the big news. Isn’t it grand? I’m sure thrilled over it. I felt life a week ago Thursday the 17th, and didn’t expect it till the 29th, sure was surprised. I went to Dr Brown and he says everything is fine and I weigh 120 lbs now and am gaining steadily. Can you imagine me plump?
I feel fine but have a slight cold – finish I’ve has for a year or more I guess. I expect I’ll feel better after the baby is born and will weigh more too.
Everyone is tickled over it and a girlfriend is having one a month after mine, we expect to have lots of fun together.
We have a cute house out on 89th & Division. Pearl can see out place and we see each other 2 or 3 times a week.
I had Dad, Pearl & the kids over for dinner last Sunday, I wish you could have seen them eat. Then we had waffles for supper.
Bubby said, “Gee, I’d sure gain & get fat if I lived here all the time. I told him I didn’t have meals like that all the time.
You remember Margaret my little girl friend? I think she’s going to come and stay with me. We get along so well and she can help me so much with my work and sewing.
Her father died a couple of months ago and she was working in a laundry. She is so small it wore her down so she had to quit.
I’m making a couple of blankets and I have some little dresses to make. I’m making most everything as I have a new White Rotary Culunish Machine. Sure is swell And I love to sew on it. It has the knee control.
Dr. Brown has 2 girls working for him. One a nurse and the other to keep his books. They’ve remodeled the whole place and he has 9 office rooms. Sure is prosperous and looks fine. They’ve built a cabin down at Cannon Beach – he showed me a view from the front window. Sure is beautiful right toward the sea. He certainly is nice and I’m glad I know someone whom I can have confidence in.
Dan’s birthday is Mar 1 and I expect the baby around the 8 now. Almost a birthday present.
Gee, I’m so darned happy and Dan is so sweet. We have a little radio now and they’re so much company. We don’t go hardly any so we appreciate on more.
Do you remember Edna’s little girl Coral? She’s in school now and as pretty as ever. Sure is cute.
Dad had quite a spell with his heart a while back. Sure don’t realize he can be growing old. Pearl is trying to get started in chickens so she can give the kids a few advantages. Well, Ann (?) greers I’m all written out. Will close now and hope to hear from you real soon.
Love, Lois

Dearest Anna,
I am ashamed for being so long in writting, seems we don’t have a day without something doing among all our friends. They all are so happy to have us here for a while they are making the most of the time. Will have to come home to rest. Guess we will not be back till around Dec 15th. Sorry we won’t be there to spend Thanksgiving with you girls.
Have seen the boys and their family’s several times. One time we were there Tom told Stevie not to do something twice & said if you do it again I will spank & you know it. Stevie had on his p.j.’s he started to push his pj pants down & backed up to Tom and said “come on get at it” I wanted to laugh but new it best not to. He is more like Tom was when small everyday. At last I am sending the pictures to you they are all so very good,
It seems we has better weather here then you have down there. Have been nice & sunshine, only 2 or 3 rains far to dry for this time of season. We read in the paper about the 90 mile wind & the terrible fire in the Sanquine Valley. Must have been terrible both wind and fire. Did the wind blow there too. Sure glad the pecan trees are tipted so at least they won’t cause trouble.
When we go to David’s now Davie & that little doll Jan climb on our laps with their favorite storybooks. They are cute children. Danny and Darlene have a sweet little baby boy. He looks like Danny & has curly hair & blue eyes.
Little Michael wasn’t at all jealous of the baby. One evening I call Michael ‘sugar’ he turned, looked at me & from then on he called me sugar all evening. When we left he said by,Sugar- see your morrow?
As yet we haven’t received our money from Maberry. He was in a car accident & near go killed so Mr. Harper told us our attorney. Maberry is supposed to get a seeleemnetn for the accident Dec 1st & promised Harper he will pay in full. So that too is one reason we want to stay till after the first. When the checks come send them on up dear.
We are still staying with Elizabeth out at Clackamas – she said will be very lonesome for her after we leave. Several of our friends have been out at different ties. Will write to Edith in day or so. Do hope she is feeling better by now. How is their house progressing. My eyes are quite a lot dimmer.

Dearest Nanna and All
23 Sept 1963
Dear Nanna and All,
Well we are back in Portland as you know by the talk with mother on the phone. Had a wonderful trip so far and the weather sure was with us just about all the way. On going thru Portland we went down to the Depot and had a nice chat with some of the old gang down there. While mother and I talked to George there was a call came for him from the hospital, and he said excuse me folks he rushed out got in his car and went to see his son. It seems like the boy had been having kidney trouble since he was around about 12 or 15 years old. Well they operated on him and put in what was called a mechanical kidney it worked a little bit and then quit. Well it seems like they have to get another kidney from a twin in order for it to function properly. And of course not having a twin the next closest to that his mother went through surgery and had on of her removed for the boy well anyway after we had made our trio up through Wash, ako, Canada and back the boy did not survive he passed away and he was only about 22 yrs old. Well it sure just about done George up. As the boys name was Tommy and George sure thought the world and all of him. Mother and I both talked to George after we cam back to Portland. The mother of the boy was Georges former wife. I don’t mother ever met her, but I knew her quite well, they also had a girl I don’t recall her name. But on account of the home life she decided to in training and became a NUN so that is in what she wanted to do and George told her that he would not stand in her way. She said yes I have fully made up my mind. Gee that sure was an awful to us both to learn about the sudden passing of Celesta’s hubby as they had only been married about 6 months. We were just sitting here In the motel and were listening tot eh news on the radio, and a Dr that use to treat Jo was out hunting ducks had a heart attack and passed very suddenly. Oh! Yes we were out to Davids and Jerry had a nice dinner (Tuesday evening) and nice visit with all of them. Little Danny you sure made a hit with him as he said he was going to marry you. He is 5 years old. Then I was sitting in a large chair and little Jan over to me and crowded between by knees and gave me a big kiss and said Grandpa I love you she will soon be 8 years old and David 9 years old had been taking lesson on the piano for about a year played one on the guitar and sang for us and he done very well. When mother sat down on the Davenport Little Danny was in her lap and Little David and Jan sat right up close one on each side of her. At the table they all waned to sit next to Grandma, well they settled with little Danny by her Davey said Grace and at the last he said Thank God for Grandpa & Grandma having dinner with us. I am not writing a separate note to Dales about cashing the check without your signature. Mother said to tell you to show your drivers license that will let them know that we are at the sam address and tell them that your are our daughter, keep the balance and we will straighten up with all our bills when we return.
Well my Dear will bring this to a close. Oh! Yes we cooked our 1st meal in the motel this evening since we left home. So will say night nighty Oh! Dear Nanna and All,
I rec’d your lovely card and also the five Smakcer inside. Thanks a million for both of them. Well will start in by telling your that your chased me and caught up with us at her Brothers place. We stayed over there just lacking a day of being a week had a time, and had a nice time, and mother got to have a nice visit with him and his family. They sure talk funny as all of them expect her brother have that real Boston accent and believe me or not it is hard for a westerner to catch onto. We left Boston at 8 p.m. we were supposed to leave at 7:30 but as usual the train was late in leaving. We were due to Chicago at 6:15 but instead we were over an hour late. Now is time change from E.S. tome too C.S. time. Plus C. Daylite Time. Gosh what a mix up, and let the darned clock alone so a fellow would know where he was at the right time of day. Boy Oh! Boy it sure is a Pain in the neck if you as me. We leave out of here this eve at about 6:30 P.M. for her old home place in Robinson Illinois for a visit then take a bus back to Chicago and get the Train for St. Paul. Don’t know how long we will stop there then Minot N. Dakota. Then too that place called Spokane and to up and see Wauneta, Back to Spokane and into Portland for awhile. And will be able to tell you more when we get that far along. On our trip we stopped at the city of Jacksonville Fla. Then next stop at Richmond Va. A tour in each of the places we stopped at. The next Place was at Washington D.C. and what a tour we had there it was great. A Guide took us thru the U.S. Beaurea of Engraving & Printing well in other words its where they Print money from 1 dollar up to 100,000 dollar Bills. There are 18 Bills in one sheet and they stack them up in stacks of 500 sheets in a bundle. After printing they cut these Bills in reg. size that we use. The Guide said that they Printed only 29 million dollars a day 5 days a week. They then store them till they get a call from one of the Federal Reserve Banks which needs the money and it is send out from D.C. too that bank They also Print 3 million stamps a day 5 days a week. Gosh! It sure made me about half peeved cause they didn’t even offer mo a new Bill to carry back as a remembrance of visiting the place. I’ll say they are sure mighty stingy with there old or new money wouldn’t you? Well guess I better ring off for now. Love and Kisses to all of you folks say Hello to Bronz and Blondie for me. Bye now from Pop Nihart.
Greetings to all from Chicago.
Our tour in Washington D.C. was a 10 hour trip all through D.C. and China Town. & to Mt Vernon Virginia to the Tomb of the Unknown Soilder & witnessed the change of Guard, was very impressive. Returned to D.C. by a big boat on the Potomac River. Some were in a hurry to get back and return by the Bus. Don’t worry about the checks going to the Bro. Luther’s they are sending them on to Robinson. It was really something meeting my Bro. after 47 years. I was looking for someone about Marion size instead he is about the highth of you girls & weigh about 130 he was to meet us at the information booth. Some others were there too to meet people. Luther walked up to me and said are you Laura, what a surprise I had. I have a sweet sister-in-law. I like her very much & two dear nieces one 14. Joyce. Janice 7 & saw my nephew Donald, 24, he is married. Janice gave Pop & I a small picture of her. She took a great shine to her Uncle Harry. She said, now Uncle Harry you kiss my picture every day. She is a sweet little child. Irene my sister-in-law said, “(I don’t know your girls I have never seen them. But tell them for me they have a very sweet mother.)” They have a summer home at New Hampshire they took us up there. It has6 bedrooms each bed is made up with bedding. Place all furnished, dishes, silver, towels, dishtowels up all they need to take when they go is their clothes for the time there, buy groceries at New Hampshire’s a beautiful place among the pines, a big lake close by, have a big picnic table & benches outside the kitchen door under pines for eating when nice weather. Would of stayed longer but folks at Robinson are having a big reunion Sat the 4th of cousins I knew when there and those I have never seen, plus my Uncle and Aunt. We leave Chicago this eve. Get there at mid-night. Uncle Walt will meet us. What a terrible time to arrive, but is only Bus in Robinson. We will do our sight seeing when we return back here on our Hotel. Two floors about us, have seen some wonderful sights since we left Babe. New York is quite a big city. Those big tall bldg’s wonder why little Blondie Baby has taken to barking & charging the fence, perhaps she misses us & that is her way to express herself will be interesting to see how she reacts when we return.
Love & Kisses to all Mother and Pop.
P.S. Glad you got work honey, sorry you have so far to drive each day, do be careful.
